Not even a hat trick can save Aces
SLIDE CONTINUES: Gold Kings notch 10th win in 12 meetings this season.

Anchorage Daily News - Daily News Staff

(Published: Saturday, April 6, 2002)

Playing with thin ranks in the thin air of Colorado Springs, Colo., J.J. Wrobel's hat trick was nifty, but not enough to rescue the continually faltering Anchorage Aces on Friday night.

They lost -- yet again.

The Aces streaked to an early two-goal lead, promptly surrendered it with a disastrous second period and lost to the Colorado Gold Kings, which is getting to be a habit. The Gold Kings, who have beaten the Aces in 10 of 12 meetings this season, earned a 6-4 victory at World Arena.

The Aces (19-43-9) have won just seven of 37 games since Jan. 1, and they have found encouraging signs as elusive as victories.

Wrobel was a bright spot, though -- he contributed to all four Anchorage goals. He scored three goals, to give him 26 this season, and set up Tobin Praznik's goal.

But that offensive outburst couldn't make up for the Aces myriad deficiencies. They played with the West Coast Hockey League minimum of 13 skaters, dressing just eight forwards and five defensemen. They were a bunch of sea-level boys playing at an altitude of 6,000 feet. They played a pretty decent team. And, most importantly, they are league's worst team.

Nonetheless, the Aces raced to a 3-1 lead through one period on two goals from Wrobel and one from Praznik.

Yet the Gold Kings (38-26-7) only required a few shifts to shred that Aces lead. Tom Perry and Chad Cabana scored in the opening four minutes of the second period to forge a 3-3 tie, and Colorado added late-period goals from Greg Schmidt and Craig Lyons to earn a 5-3 lead through 40 minutes.

Wrobel's third goal of the night, on a power play with about four minutes left in the game, gave the Aces hope. Lyons snuffed that Anchorage optimism with an empty-net goal in the waning seconds.

Aces goaltender Parris Duffus, who grew up in Denver, was pulled in favor of Jamie McCaig after the Gold Kings tied the game 3-3. Duffus returned to play well in the third period -- he stopped all 19 shots he faced in the final 20 minutes.

Colorado goalie Kirk Daubenspeck stopped 24 shots. He has played in 59 games this season, second among WCHL goalies.

Aces veteran center Dean Larson, the team's leading scorer and the WCHL's all-time leading scorer, was again held without a point. His next point will be his 700th in the league.

The Aces and Gold Kings close the regular season with a game Sunday in Colorado Springs. The Aces will then travel to Boise, Idaho, for the first two games of a first-round playoff series with the league-leading Idaho Steelheads. Colorado faces the Tacoma Sabercats in the first round.

Anchorage Daily News

(Published: June 5, 2002)

The Anchorage Aces, who recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, conducted some business Tuesday.

The West Coast Hockey League released the protected player lists for each of its seven teams. The Aces' list of 12 included forward Dean Larson, the WCHL's all-time leading scorer, and goaltender Jamie McCaig, who sparkled at times as a rookie last season.

The Aces own the rights to their protected players until Aug. 1, and no other WCHL teams can offer those players contracts until then. Unprotected players, which include veterans Paul Williams, Chad Richard and Chris Newans, are now free to sign with any team.

Whether the Aces will sign anyone in the near future is unknown.

The team hasn't been operating for nearly a month after the power was shut off in its downtown Anchorage office. Last month, the team, which is owned by Mike Cusack Jr., filed for bankruptcy protection, which allows Cusack to remain in control of the team as he creates a plan to pay creditors.

Initial court filings said the team is almost $2 million in debt. Repeated attempts to reach Cusack for comment have been unsuccessful. Bill Artus, Cusack's attorney, said he will file more documents with the bankruptcy court Thursday.

The WCHL will hold meetings next week in Las Vegas, and the status of the Aces is expected to be a topic of discussion. Adam Keller, the league's acting commissioner, said Tuesday the league is still operating as though the Aces will play this fall.

Artus said he expects Cusack to attend the league meetings.

"The name of Duffus comes from the lands of Duffus in Morayshire and is probably from the Gaelic words, dubh and uisg, meaning "darkwater" or "blackwater". Once the region was below sea level and Loch of Spynie and stagnant pools were a conspicuous feature of the area. What is now Duffus Parish includes the ancient Barony of Duffus and is 9,565 acres. Records of people named Duffus date back to the 13th century."

The Picts, the Celts, the Romans, the Irish (or the Scots as they were originally called), the Angles, the Vikings, the Normans and the English all played their parts in the story to a greater or lesser degree. To understand it all, it is necessary to have recourse to maps, and yet it is a little known fact that Scotland was not mapped until about AD 1600, long after most of the events which created the modern nation had taken place."

Hello David,

I message on your website from Bill Rail (and Angela?) gives me the impression that there are some Duffus people in Spain. I spend a lot of time there (since my wife is Spanish) so I wonder: Are there many Duffus in Spain?

I'd like to correct a slight error concerning the family tree of George Duffus of Banff. Harold Ambrose Duffus, his great grandson in Victoria (my father)had at least six children and not four. Names were Ronald (still alive) Harold "Charlie"(deceased) Marjorie (deceased)a girl whose name is unknown (died in infancy) Delphine (still alive) and me, Michael Peter. I don't suppose you want to edit other's efforts, but it might be worth mentioning that my tally of Harold Ambrose's children disagrees.

My main email address is now [email protected]

Hello! and greetings from Duffus, Moray!

When you were here for your Duffus Gathering, some of you came into Duffus Church for a short visit.  To mark the Millennium, a small group of us from Duffus, Spynie and Hopeman Church of Scotland decided to produce for the community a collection of "thoughts, memories and facts from the last century of this millennium just ended"  (quote from cover of book). The collection of material grew and in the end we had a 120-page book ( with many pictures) which related the histories of local schools, churches, village halls and the lives of people living in our communities - also features of interest in the area.

We wondered if this might be of interest to any of the Duffus clan?

The book is available from the Moray Council web-site-www.moray.org. The Moray Council Shop latest Additions

I would be delighted to answer any questions you may have.

hi

I was born and brought up in Duffus before moving to London. Most of my family still live there, very close to the church on the main road. It's good to see that there is a website for such a small insignificant village by UK or world standards. I took my laptop to show the site to my family who were bowled over by it.

Thanks very much and good luck

Dear Mr Duffus

I recently came across the Duffus family site and thought you might be able to help me. I am working on a documentary on the history of interracial relationships for Channel 4 in England and am looking into relationships between slaves and slave owners in the British West Indies.

The black Duffus family interests me a lot and I am eager to find out whether they are descended from the Duffus planters as the result of  an interracial relationship. Are there any black Duffuses in Jamaica who are your distant cousins? I presume that you have many white Duffus cousins here in Britain.

Any help you could give me would be most appreciated as I am very keen to trace the black and white descendants of slave owners and slaves, but it is very difficult to find these descendants. It is obviously much easier to find the white descendants of these plantation owners.

I do hope you will be able to shed some light on the subject as you seem to have done an amazing job with the Duffus web site.

Hi david,

I was hoping you may know of the connections of Margaret Duffus married to Joseph Ramsdale. Margaret was born in 1809 (Rattray, Scotland) and died in 1892 in Dundee. I don't have much info on her Father (I believe to be Thomas Duffus) or Mother (elizabeth Hodge) I have searched you site but with no luck. Maybe you could point me in the right direction.

Margaret was my Gr Gr Gr Grandmother.

Dundee Born Woman leaves £41 Million Pounds

Dundee born, Mrs Anna Thomson Dodge, widow of the American car pioneer, who set up the empire with the family name, and one of the world’s richest women has died. She was 103.

Her death on Tuesday was expected to re-open several tangled court battles by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for shares of her estate estimated to be in excess of $100,000,000 (£41M).

Born in Dundee in 1866, she went to the US to teach the piano.

She married Horace Dodge, a mechanic, in 1896.

Dodge, with his brother, opened a bicycle manufacturing shop and later branched out into car parts and then started making cars.

Horace Dodge died in 1920 and Mrs dodge inherited $59,000,000 (£24M).

She put it into tax-free Municipal Bonds and her fortune earned her $1,500,000 (£625,000) a year.

An Actor

In 1926, she married Hugh Dillman an unsuccessful actor, whom she met during an Italian tour.

She divorced him in 1947, after being separated seven years.

She later said "Hugh taught me how to have fun with my money”.

Mrs Dodge broke a hip seven years ago and had been confined to her 75 bedroom mansion ever since.

Dundee City Authorities said last night  “As far as is known there have been no enquiries to trace any relatives of Mrs Dodge, whose maiden name was presumably Thomson.”

Hi,

I've just discovered your website by accident. I'm currently looking into setting up a community website for Hopeman (one of which does not exist, surprisingly), where I am currently residing, and completely by accident I discovered your site.

It was the feature on the castle that my search engine initially directed me to, but I then decided to go on and have a look at the rest of your site, and I was very impressed indeed. I can see why it has won awards!

Thank you for providing such an interesting resource - it's a shame that I have to learn this information from someone across the pond, but there you go!

I shall now go and re-start my search for articles on Hopeman, from which I was pleasantly distracted...

Keep up the good work!

Regards,
