- A Kingston woman accused of killing
two people in an alcohol-related car crash last
summer will soon formally enter a plea and choose
how she’d like to be tried, a judge said
yesterday. Mr. Justice Paul Megginson of the
Ontario Court of Justice presided over pre-trial
discussions between a Crown attorney and a lawyer
for Teresa Duffus yesterday afternoon. The
closed-door discussions lasted just over one hour.
Afterward, in open court, Mr. Justice Megginson
said it appears Duffus will elect to have a
preliminary hearing held before the case proceeds.
Duffus didn’t attend yesterday’s proceeding.
Her case will be back before the courts next month
when the date for a preliminary hearing is
expected to be set. Duffus faces five charges,
including two counts of criminal negligence
causing death, stemming from a July crash on
Sussex Boulevard, a residential street in the
city’s west end. Duffus and her husband, Tom,
were seriously injured in the crash. It’s
alleged that on the evening of July 2, Teresa
Duffus was driving a car that jumped the curb and
plowed into a house, killing Geri Miller, 64, who
was in her living room. Roy Coleman, a passenger
in the back seat of the car, was also killed.
In addition to Tom Duffus, who was a passenger
in the front seat, Coleman’s wife, Margaret, a
back seat passenger, was also injured. Teresa
Duffus is also charged with two counts of impaired
driving causing bodily harm related to the
injuries suffered by her husband and Margaret
Coleman. The fifth charge is driving with a
blood-alcohol level above 0.08. She is free on
bail.
