Felix Unite Management Division

Teambuilding on the Breede Riveris a joint venture between Felix Unite River Adventures and Cape Town training company Applied Dynamics. The company is the first choice in training for organizations requiring changed behavior and improved productivity.

FUMD was incorporated in October 1997. The company was the logical and dynamic  progression from the corporate business that the  rivers side of Felix Unite Tourism Group was doing...70% of the one and two day trips are corporate in nature.

These corporate groups were using the rivers and FU's facilities for informal or non-objective orientated, internal and external customer team building, motivational and reward reasons. This resulted in the strategic alliance with Applied Dynamics. Felix has a vast database of clients and enormous experience in the outdoor field, and Applied Dynamics has leading intellectual capital.

Meet two team members responsible for putting the fun back into training:

Dynamic training and team building programs

Andrew Johnstone & Bobby Duffus...
Andrew and Bobby have developed their training skills through their life experiences. Their methods are different but they share the belief that learning should be fun and relevant, and that whatever skills are learned should be immediately applicable in the workplace.

Andrew Johnstone, Managing Director of Felix Unite Management Development training company, has honed his expertise to focus on three specific areas:

  1. development of management, workplace skills and team development in the workplace

  2. time and performance management, and

  3. the facilitation of short term goal setting through conferencing and team-effectiveness courses.

The training division has been involved with all facets of business from the computer world to agricultural research to fishing companies and schools. Each client has different problems to sort out and particular goals they want to achieve. The training company provides the format and the client provides the content of a particular program. Andrew's role is chiefly that of facilitator.

A new area is what he calls "customer advisory boards", where corporate groups and their clients are brought together in brainstorming sessions to assess service, quality and perceptions in the marketplace. This can profoundly enhance the level of service between the two groups.

A mechanical engineer, Andrew grew up in Zimbabwe before leaving for Cape Town to continue his studies. While studying and later working as a research and design engineer for Panasonic, he river-guided for eight years on a freelance basis for Felix Unite River Adventures. He became aware of the vast amount of river trips that corporate clients were booking for team building and fun activities and realized there was a gap in the market for a management development company within the Felix Unite Tourism Group.

Bobby Duffus combines his experiences of traditional and urban culture in South Africa and East Africa with first world business requirements to create change and diversity in management programs used for team development. He explores cross-cultural themes where appropriate, but every process has to relate back to the business objective they set out to achieve. He believes change is a process, not an event, and designs his programs with that in mind.

Bobby spent seven years in Johannesburg's marketing and promotions industry. He often equates his team building programs to the advertising industry where highly individualized talents are vital for a team to achieve its ultimate goals. When approached by a client, his first question is, "What are your needs?" Once the training team has a clear idea of what the client wants, they custom-design a program to help them achieve their objectives. The activities used to get there are just part of it.

Part of the process is to make every person in the team aware of their own potential and help them maximize the part they play in it. No excuses are accepted and accountability and leadership take on a group focus. The bottom line is: if you are not playing your part, why are you working here?
