Duffus Castle Grampian
This motte-and-bailey
style castle was built in 1140. A moat surrounded an extensive
outer bailey and walled inner bailey. Duffus Castle is the
best-preserved example of a 12th century motte. Scots
destroyed the original wooden castle in 1297. In the early
1300s, the tower was repaired and stone was added to the
fortress.
A large, rectangular stone tower rising
from the foundation was probably not much higher than the
current ruin. At the end of the 17th century, the earthen
foundations on the motte became unstable and the northwest
corner of the great tower broke away from the rest of the
fortress and slid down the motte.
This castle is open to the public
year-round.
