DEATH OF MORAY MINISTER
09:00 - 03 October
2003
|
A Popular minister
who was an active member of Moray society for almost 20 years
has died at the age of 74. The Rev John Stuart was minister of
Duffus, Spynie and Hopeman parish between 1984 and 1993,
following spells as an Army chaplain and in charges in Glasgow
and the Borders.
His first wife, Audrey, with whom he
had children Graham and Jennifer, died in 1973. Mr Stuart
remarried in 1978, to Elma, and moved to Moray in 1984, where
he served as clerk to the Presbytery of Moray for many
years.
After retiring in 1993, Mr and Mrs Stuart set up
home at Cummingston. Mr Stuart was involved with the
Alzheimers Scotland support group in Elgin and sat on the
charity's Scottish central committee.
He was also
instrumental in setting up the Moray Church Trail in 2001, to
promote the area's abbeys, churches and cathedral. And, even
after retiring, he continued to carry out supply work in
pulpits throughout the area. Marjorie Lawrie, Moray
Presbytery's press officer, described Mr Stuart as a man full
of life and love, who was never happier than when his
grandchildren were
visiting.
